A Mash of New Models for Microsoft

Has Bill Gates found the hosting religion? Not likely. While his company is putting out some new hosted CRM and other business productivity apps, it's clear from recent statements that licensed software still rules. Is it possible for two business models to exist in one company? Sure, at least until the larger market decides it prefers one over the other. If there's a buck to be made either way, Gates would be a fool not to pursue.

Hosted services and mash-ups will have a place in Microsoft's future, but it's doubtful they will fully supplant the company's traditional licensed software model. Still, Redmond is recoding some Office products to make them gel more fully with an integrated world. Microsoft recently showed new Dynamics products that utilize interface cues from Vista and Office to form a tighter bond. The challenges are large. Dynamics must be rewritten to accommodate .NET, but not in such a way that it competes with hosted services from MSN/Live partners. Office and Windows have to be reinvented as on-ramps for Web-based activity. And how will Microsoft migrate its servers from providers of licensed software to managers of grid-based applications? Though Google appears to be Redmond's biggest competitor in this space, don't count out Yahoo.

How To License Your Big Idea

How To License Your Big Idea

Don Lindemann thinks his makeover for the plastic drink bottle could be a hit at the retail counter. Since late 2004, the Minneapolis-based packaging consultant has spent about $9,000 patenting and prototyping 17 different ways his multi-chamber bottles could hold combination packages, like a granola bar and soda pop, or an aspirin and spring water.

Licensing an idea and convincing someone else to pay to use it is big business. Royalty payments generated $115 billion for U.S. companies in 2002. But before you picture yourself rolling in royalties, take this reality check to the bank.

Careers: Don't wait till you hit your breaking point

Don't wait till you hit your breaking point

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Take responsibility for your career and financial future. Whether you're the victim of a horrid boss, office politics, or lousy industry prospects is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is what you're going to do to change your situation. You don't want to wait until you're pushed to your breaking point. No one can make good decisions when they're angry and under pressure.

The idea here is to strategize and plan. Think about where you want to be one year or three years from now. Let your boss know your career goals. Make an appointment to talk about what work you need to do and skills you need to acquire to put you in a position for a promotion. Check in every month or so to discuss your progress. If your boss isn't interested in your career progress but you like the company, scope out other opportunities at the organization.

Because you're being proactive and thinking about your future, you have the luxury of networking and investigating over months. A division you really want to work with may not have a job for you today, but if they know you're interested, you may get a call a few months down the line.

More women enjoy being their own bosses
Abridged: The New York Times

NEW YORK, NY -- A recent study by the Center for Women's Business Research in Washington found that the number of women-owned businesses with no employees grew 18 percent from 1997 to 2004, twice the rate for all businesses without employees. In addition, the revenue for such women-owned firms grew 66 percent, compared with 42 percent over all.

The center estimates that about 5.4 million firms fall into the category of women-owned businesses with no employees, and they generate an estimated $167 billion in sales annually.Michelle S. Butler, program director of the Women's Business Center of California in San Diego, said: "Women are going out and taking matters into their own hands. That's why they've become the fastest-growing demographic of entrepreneurs." The businesses they choose often dovetail with their own interests or expertise, resulting in a wide variety of start-ups.

In San Diego, Ms. Butler gave these examples: a Mexican immigrant whose family had been in the trucking business bought a tractor-trailer rig and established a company to handle cross-country hauling contracts. Another woman, who had been a nurse's aide, started a business providing health care services to the elderly in their homes.

Cover Letter Magic: Ask for a job interview-and get it!

Cover Letter Magic: Ask for a job interview-and get it!
Amazing-Cover-Letters, Jimmy Sweeney

CALABASAS, CA -- Just how important is it to ask for the job interview clearly and directly in your cover letter? It's everything! So the question remains: how effectively are you asking? The following four ways will help you nail down many more job interviews:

1) Attract attention with a great headline using Bold Title Caps right below the greeting in your cover letter. Example: May We Meet In Person To Discuss This Position?

2) Focus on your qualifications in the beginning of your letter. Example: I'd love the opportunity to meet with you in person and discuss how I might help [company name].

3) Be clear about time in your final paragraph. Example: I'd like the opportunity to interview with you in the next two weeks.

4) Communicate enthusiasm at the end of your letter. Example: I'm excited about meeting you in person to discuss my qualifications.

Give up the "wait and hope" job search technique. Ask for the job interview clearly, directly and sincerely in your next cover letter instead. You will land quality meetings that bring results! Take charge of your future now by asking for what you want.

Career Tip: Good networking is essential

Career Tip: Good networking is essential
L.J. Bothell, Graphic Designer and Freelance Writer

SEATTLE, WA -- Regardless of whether you are currently employed or actively seeking your next position, good networking is essential. Your networking savvy and list of contacts will determine whether or not you get leads for the opportunities you want. You need to be the first person your contacts think of when an opportunity presents itself. View your networking strategy two ways:

Soft networking.
This is a subtle, indirect form of getting yourself into circulation. Do this by raising your profile, marketing successes you've already achieved and developing a network of friendly acquaintances who are always on the lookout for you. For instance, join an organization or two so you can swap tips, meet new contacts and get access to hot resources. Meet new contacts while you volunteer or use your talents to help others.

Direct networking.
This is your targeted connection with a specific contact so you can learn about and explore leads. Make sure you have business cards ready and offer a self-promotional piece or a free-resource/tip early in your conversation. Have a short identity statement ready which highlights your primary skills/problem-solving capabilities. Be able to work recent achievements into your conversation so you can encourage your new contact to remember you.

Add Some Pizzazz To Your Cover Letter

Add Some Pizzazz To Your Cover Letter
By Linda Matias, CareerStrides

"It is with great interest and enthusiasm that I submit my resume for your review."

Unfortunately, most cover letters are written in this humdrum tone. Cover letters do not need to be so dull, nor so uninteresting. This style of cover letter writing has been around for years; and it's a trend that has overstayed its welcome.

It's perfectly acceptable to add pizzazz to cover letters in an effort to engage the reader in your story. Taking a business approach while adding a personal touch to the cover letter will certainly make you stand out from other candidates. But many are skeptical about adding a personal story to the cover letter because rumor has it that cover letters should be completely business-oriented. That isn't true. There are occasions when it is appropriate to deviate from what others expect to read, and of course, there are times when you should remain with the "tried and true" method.

When Getting Personal Doesn't Make Sense:
Getting personal can be tricky because most people have a tendency to reveal too much. Only choose to disclose personal information if doing so will help sell you for the position. Don't use the cover letter as a vehicle to make excuses, to apologize for your current situation or to describe how difficult the job search has been.

For example, the following is not a personal story that should be fleshed out in a cover letter: A few months ago, I was laid off and haven't been able to secure a position since. I have answered countless classified ads and no one will give me an opportunity. My bills are piling up and I need someone to give me a chance. I am a good worker and if you hire me, you will be happy with your decision.

The above introduction smacks of desperation, and although you may be truthful when saying you'll do a fantastic job, the reader will think either:
A) if nobody else wants this person, I sure don't or
B) this person will take on any position just to pay the bills while continuing to look for the right opportunity.

While that may not be your intention, it will be the perception.

When Getting Personal Makes Sense:
Not every situation is the same and some situations call for more than just a reiteration of your resume. If you are currently unemployed, a career changer, or just have an interesting story to share about your career progression, feel open to elaborate in the cover letter.

The following is an appropriate personal story to tell in a cover letter: It's human nature to believe that life-altering events will only happen to "them," not us. With this popular notion in tow, we go about our lives doing the best we know how. Then one day, we are struck with a reality that changes our view of the world and our purpose on this earth.

Each of us has our own unique life changing events; mine was when my companion was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. When I made the decision to leave the workforce to tend to my companion's illness, I quickly realized there was never enough time to get everything done: paperwork, doctor's visits, clinical studies, and housekeeping responsibilities. Even with all that needed to be done, I welcomed the opportunity to care for him when he needed me the most. In fact, I am grateful I was able to follow him through his journey. I realize this is a luxury not afforded to everyone. Because of the experiences I had in and out of the nursing home, I decided to return to college and earn a master's degree in Health Advocacy at Sarah Lawrence College.

The above is a heartwarming tale of how one's personal experience changed their course in life. This particular story is a great sales tool because it alludes to the empathy and compassion this candidate has for others who are going through what she experienced.

Recognizing if your personal story makes sense:
When getting personal in a cover letter, the key is to focus on a topic that:
A) will interest the reader
B) is relevant to your career objective, and
C) will add weight to your list of qualifications.
If you can enthusiastically answer "yes" to all those distinctive qualities, then your story is one that should be told.

Linda Matias has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, New York Newsday, Newsweek, and HR-esource.com. She is President of CareerStrides and the National Resume Writers' Association.

Are H-1B Visas a Cog in the Offshoring Machine?

Are H-1B Visas a Cog in the Offshoring Machine?

H-1B visas are touted as a way to fill empty IT seats in the U.S., but a new report suggests that the visa program is merely a salary bonanza for U.S. companies — and an important bonus for offshoring companies.

The technology industry has been pushing for an increase in the maximum number of H-1B visas allowed, saying the visa workers are the best way to fill empty seats in the IT sector and that these workers will create more U.S. jobs by creating new technologies. But that reasoning is a scam, according to a new report done for the Center for Immigration Studies. The report found that the H-1B visa program is merely a salary bonanza for companies as they pay, on average, $13,000 less to H-1B visa workers than comparable U.S. workers. Not only does the H-1B program undercut U.S. workers? salaries, it also acts as part of the offshoring effort; nine out of the 10 top companies requesting H-1B visas are offshoring. Congress is currently weighing whether to support a bill that would increase the H-1B visa cap from 65,000 to 115,000, with the option of adding 20 percent more down the road.

Making The Best of a Lay-Off

Making The Best of a Lay-Off
By Teena Rose
Columnist, Public Speaker and Certified Resume Writer

Getting laid off is a real punch in the gut. Even when you know the axe is going to fall, actually getting the news via the impersonal pink slip in the pay envelop or the personal, face-to-face good-bye, stinks.

However, it's common. In fact, in the contemporary workplace, it's the norm. The days of putting in your 40 years and retiring with a gold watch went out with grandpa. Today's workers, regardless of level, will work at an average of five different jobs in their careers. So, lay-offs are pretty much a given. Yes, it stinks, but there are some things you can do to take the sting out of losing a job.

Develop a Doomsday Plan: If you know that you're likely to be laid off at some point in your career, doesn't it make sense to put together a contingency plan?

By planning ahead, you can avoid the panic job search. That means tucking a few bucks away out of every paycheck. To be prudent, you should try to accumulate at least three months salary; six months is better.

Keep your ear to the ground at work. News of job layoffs often slips out and spreads through the company like wildfire. It may be just office gossip or it may be the warning bell to redo your resume and start a new job search - before the axe falls. It's always better to be proactive rather than reactive - especially when living expenses are in question.

Be Cool: The worst thing you can do is fire off an email to your manager comparing her husband to a mule. Before you clean out your desk, you want some things from these people, so never burn your bridges behind you - no matter how good it might make you feel.

Negotiate Your Severance: Not always possible, of course, but in larger corporations there's usually some wiggle room for negotiations. Perhaps you'd prefer to keep your paid health insurance for 12 months rather than take a lump sum or vice-versa. If you can work it out with your soon-to-be-ex-employer, develop a severance package that best suits your immediate needs.

Career Counseling: If it's offered, take it. You've been laid off, but the company still cares enough to help you find a new job. Take advantage. It's free. And it may help you land your next job two months faster.

Re-Training: Same deal here. Larger corporations may offer to retrain you or pay for your new education. Take it. It's free, it's fast track and it works.

References: References are a must. That's one reason you must remain cool at all times. You want a good, out-the-door reference. And don't stop with your immediate supervisor. Get letters of reference from the higher-ups too.

Letters from clients and customers also look good in an employment package or brag book, so don't be shy about calling a few of your best customers and asking for a letter of recommendation. Very impressive to a future employer.

Leave the Stapler: You might be tempted to load up on office supplies, coffee, cartons of paper towels and a couple of laptops as you exit stage right. Don't do it. It's not worth it. It's unprofessional. And, even though you've been laid off, stealing is still stealing.

Leave on the best terms possible. Handshakes, smiles, and best wishes all around. Leave the stapler behind. Being laid off may be a body blow to your self-esteem, but it shouldn't be and it doesn't have to be. You need to bounce back quickly. One day of abject self-pity is allowed. After that, time to start another job search.

Only this time...you're ready!

Community-oriented marketing generates visibility, loyalty, and valuable info on your customers

David Frey, president of Texas-based Marketing Best Practices, says small businesses can use community-oriented marketing as a powerful tool to find out their customers' interests and learn why people do business with them. Small businesses can then use their imagination to take advantage of that knowledge.

"We all have a desire to belong to a group of people that have common interests" Frey says. "When a company taps into that inner desire and creates a community that someone can belong to, the people who belong to that community will naturally be appreciative and loyal to the company."

"People won't care about you until you show that you care about them," he says. "Community marketing does just that."

Moving IT Decision-Making to the Boardroom

Moving IT Decision-Making to the Boardroom

Company boards approve IT budgets all the time, but not many really pay attention to what they're approving. In an effort to avoid what one writer calls the "happy to be ignorant" attitude, more boards are organizing committees specifically for technology requests. Members include everyone from company officers to business process owners to full time IT staffers based in the departments they support. Others suggest even further specialization of committees, like one for new software, one for infrastructure improvement, one for process improvement and so on. Communication between CEOs and CIOs is also critical, and appointing former CIOs as board members may not be a bad idea, either.

VoIP and Cellular on the Move Together

VoIP and Cellular on the Move Together

The realization has taken root that mobilized VoIP and cellular services will complement and not compete with each other. Unlicensed mobile access is the tie that will bind these two platforms, enabling phone calls started on one to move to the other and back seamlessly. Allied Business Intelligence says there will be 100 million Wi-Fi-enabled mobile handsets in the field by 2009. Particularly in Europe, there is an increasing move of subscribers from traditional fixed lines to VoIP and/or cellular service. There are myriad infrastructure and device issues related to running Wi-Fi and cellular on the same network. Two industry groups the Wi-Fi Alliance and CTIA-The Wireless Association said earlier this month that they will develop and promote certification programs for cell phones that provide both Wi-Fi and cellular functionality. The initial focus will be on radio frequency performance mapping in an environment in which both networks are operational.

Event Overview:
Today's Managed Service Providers (MSPs) face tremendous pressure to
improve services, reduce costs, and manage risks in order to deliver
revenue and profitability in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
The traditional areas of managed services such as network design,
implementation and monitoring are getting more and more commoditized.
Intense competition is significantly increasing price pressures, thereby
impacting the revenue. To succeed, MSPs need to augment their existing
services with newer, higher-value services that provide better business
value to their customers, offer better stickiness and provide cross
-sell and up-sell opportunities. This often requires moving to a
business - focused service model and away from more traditional device -
centric service offerings.

Join this live, interactive eSeminar sponsored by Computer Associates
and learn how the Managed Services market is evolving . You'll hear from
our panel of experts as they explore how infrastructure management
solutions and OSS/BSS systems play a critical role in that evolution.
You'll have exclusive access to the five critical steps necessary to
drive business efficiency and growth in your managed services portfolio:

* "Grow-as-you-go" Flexibility: Avoid being locked into disparate
point-solutions and technologies. Invest in platforms that allow
you to "grow-as-you-go";
* Scalability and Performance: Invest in scalable, high-performance
management platforms and support solutions that attract a critical
mass of customers - quickly and cost effectively;
* Comprehensiveness of Portfolio: Implement management solutions
that address customer business needs end-to-end and provide a
flexible path to move up and across the stack, including Services
and Business Processes layers;
* Aligning Investments and Cost Efficiency: Leverage existing
investments to the maximum by implementing open, integrated and
modular management solutions that drive OSS/BSS automation to the
highest levels, keeping per - unit costs low;
* Fast Time-to-Market: Invest in strategic, risk-sharing
partnerships with platform vendors to achieve agility and
flexibility - to offer higher-valued services quickly and effectively.
