Results-Driven Marketing: A Guide to Growth and Profits

Results-Driven Marketing: A Guide to Growth and Profits

Munich, January 31, 2006 -- The debate about whether creativity or analysis is more important in marketing has been around for years. But there's no reason to sacrifice one to the other. Results-Driven Marketing: A Guide to Growth and Profits, a strategy+business Reader published in fall 2005 and the source for this article, lays out the case for using analysis at each of the eight links along the value chain to boost creativity. By being more scientific, the book's authors argue, marketers can focus their creative efforts on the activities that will yield the best return on the investment.

Following Yahoo to a Wealth of Traffic

Following Yahoo to a Wealth of Traffic
By Mark Daoust (c) 2006

Consider Yahoo the first major casualty of the search engine wars. Yahoo has admitted (http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/060124-073511) that they cannot reasonably expect to take away any significant amount of the search market share from Google, so they have chosen to be happy as the second most visited search engine on the Internet.

On the surface, this may seem strange. Why would Yahoo ever publicly announce that they are 'throwing in the towel' in the search engine war? That would be similar to Pepsi recommending that people drink their product only if Coca-Cola is not available. From a business standpoint, it is absolutely ridiculous and makes absolutely no sense.

But be careful to not read into this too far. Yahoo may have tipped their hat to Google as being dominant in the traditional search engine market, but this does not mean that they are giving up the fight for Internet users' attention. In fact, for some time now, Yahoo has been moving towards a market which is quickly emerging as being just as powerful as search engines currently are.

Yahoo Moves to Web 2.0 Style Websites

In a few of the articles published here at Site Reference we have mentioned Web 2.0 (http://www.site-reference.com/articles/Website-Development/Web-2-0-Fad-or-the-Future.html ) and how Yahoo seems to be following this development trend, but we have never looked into why Yahoo is so fascinated by Web 2.0.

As most of you probably know, Yahoo launched My Web 2.0
(http://myweb2.search.yahoo.com), a public bookmarking service, along with acquiring Del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us ), a well-established public bookmarking service. Yahoo also launched Yahoo Answers (http://answers.yahoo.com ), a service which relies on a community of users to answer questions that the same
community asks.

There is a common trend with all of these services - they all rely on the input from a vast community. Del.icio.us works well because it relies on thousands of people deciding which websites are important rather than relying on one person's (or one algorithm's) opinion. This is the entire idea behind a folksonomy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folksonomy ) driven
website - that when enough votes are tallied, the general public will decide which websites are important to specific topics, and which websites are not worth taking the time to bookmark.

An Alternative to Search Engines

Search engines provide a very simple service: they unite web users with a website that matches their current interest. It just so happens, however, that services like My Web 2.0 and Del.icio.us (public bookmarking services) have the ability to do the exact same thing - and possibly in a more effective and
timely manner.

Suppose you want to find new resources for SEO. You could spend your time using the keyword "SEO" in Google
(http://www.google.com/search?q=seo&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 ) in a regular web search, but the results for such a competitive term tend to remain fairly static over time. An alternative would be to look at what people are tagging as "SEO" at a service like Del.ico.us (http://del.icio.us/seo ). Here you are
presented with an entirely new list of pages that are (for the most part) relevant to what you are looking for, and are certainly filled with fresh, up-to-date information.

The information at a public bookmarking service is not
necessarily always going to be the most complete, but it is the information that web users, as a collective unit, have determined to be worth visiting. In this way, public bookmarking services are more effective than search engines in filtering out which content is important, and which content is not worth reading (or even outright spam).

Add the fact that these results are available in RSS form and you suddenly can be presented with the hottest information on your topic that the web has to offer. I personally subscribe to feeds that look at "Google", "Yahoo", "SEO", and other topics that are relevant for my day to day life.

Obviously public bookmarking is not evolved enough for every industry. As it stands now, most of the quality information that you can get through a service like Del.icio.us relates to more technical fields, such as programming or photography. But as more people bookmark their favorite sites, the more a service
like Del.icio.us will grow useful.

What Does This Have To Do With Yahoo! - And How Does It Help Me?

Traditionally, when there is a market that is worth exploring for traffic, Yahoo! has been there. When Hotmail was released, Yahoo answered with their email program. When Monster.com became popular, Yahoo acquired HotJobs. With every major traffic generating innovation, Yahoo seems to get involved.

This raises the question - if Yahoo is content with remaining in second place in the search market, and at the same time being active in the Web 2.0 market by buying social bookmarking sites, launching their own social bookmarking service, launching Yahoo!
Answers, etc., shouldn't we as website owners look to these services as a way to promote our businesses?

Everyone knows that you should optimize your website for the search engines, but how many people take the time to optimize their websites for bookmarking services? Not very many people consider trying to work their way up to the top of these websites, but they are actually missing out on a significant source of traffic.

Darren Rowse of ProBlogger (http://www.problogger.net ) talked about how much traffic he received from getting to the front
page of Del.ico.us (http://www.problogger.net/archives/2006/01/06/7-ways-to-guarantee-getting-to-the-top-of-the-delicious-popular-page/).
In the end, he saw 8,000 visitors in one day from that front page exposure and garnered a number of external links from it as well. Imagine just how much traffic a website could receive by constantly being near the top on a website like Del.ico.us.

Getting to the top of public bookmarking sites is not easy (just as SEO is not easy), but the reward is significant. Unlike SEO, getting to the top of a public bookmarking service is truly a viral way of marketing your website. Not only will you receive the benefit of being exposed in a very public place, but those who have put you there will talk about your website on their sites, and grow your business virally.

Who knows - public bookmarking may just overtake traditional search as a source for your traffic.

Choosing Your Outsourcing Partner

Choosing Your Outsourcing Partner

Once the decision to outsource has been made, the hard part's over, isn't it? Maybe not. The question then becomes, "Which vendor is right?" Our research has uncovered several things to keep in mind: If you're considering a small- to medium-size business, think about using a pilot project, and seek customer referrals during the project bidding stage. If an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) fits the bill, identify the skill sets necessary to bring the product to market, but remember that the relationship between the parties is of utmost importance. The key there, of course, is communication. Finally, if you're about to renew an existing outsourcing contract, now's the time to push for a better deal at a better price.

Jobs: How Not to Write a Resume

How Not to Write a Resume

By Kevin Donlin

You can learn a lot about how to do something right by first learning what NOT to do. Take resumes, for example.

I review about 200-300 a month, and most have at least 2-3 mistakes. Yet, all those hundreds of mistakes can be grouped into just a handful of categories, which you would do well to avoid.

Read on and learn how to write a better resume by avoiding the mistakes of others, some of them unintentionally hilarious ...

Mistake #1: "Golden Retriever Syndrome": Never talk about yourself in terms that could also describe a hunting dog, like the following language, which appears in far too many resumes I see:

"Hard-working, self-motivated and dependable individual."

Tired phrases like that mean nothing to employers, because they could apply to almost anyone ... or almost anyone's dog.

Instead, dump the empty assertions and back up the claims in your resume with facts, like this:

"Proven sales skills. Ranked in top 3 among 78 reps for 5 straight years, exceeding sales quotas for 18 of 20 quarters."

See the difference?

Mistake #2: A Verbal Jungle: To improve your resume (or anything you write), read it out loud. Since writing is just words on paper, reading it aloud will help you write as you would speak.

Here's an example of language so dense, you'll need a machete to find any meaning:

"Directed assembly of elements from business units in engineering, development, program management, distribution, and legal to effect market research, proposal responses, and contract management into comprehensive, virtual, successful teams ..."

After reading that three times, I'm still baffled.

Worse, do you think employers have time to read a resume three times to figure it out? No. As a result, that job seeker is still looking for work, I'll wager.

Solution: read your resume out loud before sending it out. If you find yourself gasping for breath halfway through a sentence, stick a period or dash in there and break it in two.

And if anything you write sounds less than 100% clear when you read it aloud, revise until it would make sense to your mother. Doing so will ensure that your resume resonates with readers at all levels, from HR managers to your future boss.

Mistake #3: Negative Nuance: Just one stray word can derail a whole sentence. You know that. But in a resume, the wrong choice of words can brand you as unprofessional or careless in the eyes of employers.

Here's an example of resume wording that gives off the wrong nuance, even though the facts are clear enough:

"Spearheaded use of resources in Vietnam in spite of resistance from senior management ..."

I don't know about you, but "Spearheaded," "Vietnam" and "resistance" in the same sentence make me think of a John Wayne movie. Which detracts from what the job seeker is trying to say.

Before sending your resume to employers, send it to at least 2-3 friends whose judgment you trust. Ask them to read it for grammar and punctuation, but also for unintended meanings. Revise as needed.

Mistake #4: Jumbles of Jargon: Some resumes pile on the buzzwords in a vain effort to impress. Like this:

"New-media pioneer working with technical and business professionals to create new ways of presenting content and impactful tools for producing content and organizing workflow."

We'll pass on "impactful" for now -- what does a "new-media pioneer" do, exactly? I've got a picture in my head of covered wagons and HD-TV, but I don't think that's right ....

Again, you can nip most crud in the bud by reading your resume out loud and then sending it to a friend for honest input. Because friends don't let friends embarrass themselves.

Here's hoping that exposing these 4 common resume gaffes will help you avoid them!

How To :: Effective Link Building through Link Baiting

How To :: Effective Link Building through Link Baiting
    By Rob Sullivan (c) 2006

There is a tactic out there embraced by bloggers but rarely used
by typical websites. It is called Link Baiting.

In this article I explain what link baiting is and how everyone,
not just bloggers, can use it to build quality links.

This is a topic that's been around for a while but I don't think
a lot of people know what it is, or how to use it to their
    advantage.

I think the name "Link Baiting" could be considered a black hat
technique which is why most people wouldn't consider it as a
    legitimate organic tactic.

However link baiting is merely link building with a twist:
Rather than hunting out links, you are bringing the links to you
through unique and popular site content.

So how does Link Baiting work?

Link Baiting is just like fishing. You publish a new page on a
topic (I'll cover those later) and set it free on the web.
Hopefully others pick up on the content as fresh and interesting
and link to it. The article is the bait, and the link is the
    catch.

A properly created page can capture huge links on its own with
little to no effort from you.

For example, on another site, about a year ago, I wrote an
article about the Florida Update. I spend the month or 2 after
the initial update analyzing results and I then published my
theory on what the update was.

That article has earned 88 links to date. And the best link, in
my view, is a link from the ODP from the Google News category
    http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Search_Engines/Google/News_and_Media .

In fact my article appears in the top 10, and is linked to as a
reference in many of the other top listings for a Google search
    for "Florida Update."

So what was so special about the article?

While I never intended for it to be link bait, it turns out it
was a typical "hook" page. Performancing blog has a really good
summary on link baiting (http://performancing.com/node/38 )
which I will further explain here.

With link building there are essentially 5 types of "hooks" or
pages built to encourage links. They are: News, Contrary,
    Attack, Resource and Humor.

A News hook is one where you report on industry news. But it's
not just a rehashing of someone else's post. It should be unique
either a scoop that no one else has caught, or it could even
be a summary of various viewpoints. A news hook could also be
comprised of a story you have proved to be false.

Contrary hooks are when you contradict what someone else says.
It should be someone prominent in the industry and it should be
    controversial.

For example, if I was to write an article that proclaimed that
Danny Sullivan's latest theory was bunk, it would probably
generate buzz. Especially if I could provide corroborating
    evidence backing up my assertion.

Recently Mike Grehan posted just such an article on Clickz
    (http://www.clickz.com/experts/search/results/article.php/3575856 )
in which he again pointed out that he doesn't believe in a
Google Sandbox. He even refers to other posts in which the
Sandbox has been beaten to death.

Soon after he posted this article (which, by the way was posted
just one week ago) many other SEM's jumped on him purporting to
    have proof of the Sandbox.

And, if you use Yahoo's Site Explorer
(http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/) to look at who links to
this article, you will see that Yahoo! Has already picked up on
    almost 80 links (http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?
    p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.clickz.com%2Fexperts%2Fsearch%2Fresults%2F
article.php%2F3575856&bwm=i&bwms=p) to this one article. I'd
say that Mike has done a great job of link baiting!

Attack hooks take the contrary hooks a step further, by
launching personal attacks on people taking the debunking of
theories to the next level. The original post
    (http://www.seomoz.org/blogdetail.php?ID=687) from SEOmoz was
close to an attack hook, but after they edited it, it became
less of an attack They reacted to the Mike Grehan article on the
Sandbox with some haste and turned it personal. To their credit
they did tone it down some, but it's pretty close to a flame.
Who knows, maybe this article will be considered an attack on
SEOmoz and will generate similar buzz.

A Resource hook is more of an informational page. It's one that
aggregates a bunch of information and distills it for visitors.

In fact this site is much like that. We take a bunch of news,
distill it to its most meaningful and then provide our
interpretation of what it means. Then, others pick up on the
article and either repost it, or at least link to it.

Finally is a Humour hook. With this link bait you post jokes,
funny stories, weird or funny pictures that you've found or
anything else that will warrant a review from others and
    hopefully a link.

There are tons of blogs devoted to this such as the Obscure

10 big deductions too many people miss (2005 Tax Returns)

10 big deductions too many people miss

If you don't know about a potential tax break, you won't take it. Here are the deductions that a lot of taxpayers seem to forget.

    By Jeff Schnepper

File your tax return at http://www.TaxProsOnline.com
All state and federal forms included. Fast, Easy & Free e-file.
    ======================================================

How many times have you done your taxes and, three weeks later, learned you had missed the opportunity for a deduction? Too many, I'm sure. How can you not miss these deductions the next time? Start planning now.

I've found a number of deductions that my own clients often miss. Here are 10 of them that can affect your tax bill for 2005 and your tax planning for 2006.

    Noncash contributions
Charity, as I hope everyone remembers, begins with a tax deduction. If you didn't have the cash when it came time to contribute, I hope you charged it. The deduction is allowed in the year of charge, not when you actually pay the bill. Get a receipt from the charity to which you made a donation and, if you're still worried about documentation, get the credit card company to send you their record of the transaction.

Now, let's say you emptied your closets and gave everything to Goodwill or a similar charity. The value of your donated items -- clothes, furniture, whatever -- is deductible. Get a written receipt. With noncash charitable contributions, the rule is simple: No receipt means no deduction if you get audited.Simplify your taxes and
    get your refund faster.
    File online.

If you've already dumped your old clothes in a Salvation Army box and walked away without a receipt, take the deduction anyway. You've legitimately made the contribution. You just may not be able to prove it in an audit. Play the audit lottery. You're still an honest person. (If you can, reconstruct as much as you can the list of items you donated and then figure out their market value. The easiest way is to go to a Salvation Army or thrift store and check prices there. And then, of course, get that receipt.)

    New points on refinancing
With interest rates so low over the past few years -- even in 2005 -- lots of homes have been refinanced, sometimes more than once.

Any points you pay to refinance your home can be deducted on a monthly basis over the life of the new loan. So, if you refinanced your mortgage on June 1, 2005, for a 20-year term, seven out of 240 months will have passed after Dec. 31. If you paid $2,400 in points, you can write off $70 ($10 a month for seven months) for 2005. You can write off $120 for 2005 and each year thereafter until the points have been deducted in full. The amount may not be huge, but every little bit helps.

    Old points on refinancing
This is one deduction lots of people miss. All unamortized points on an old refinancing are deducted in the year of a new refinancing.

So, let's say you refinanced on June 1, 2004, and paid $2,400 in points. You refinanced again on June 1, 2005. You can deduct all the remaining points on the 2004 loan. That's $2,280 plus the $50 you could deduct for January through May 2005. Likewise, if you refinance the 2005 loan in 2006, you will be able to write off the remaining balance on your 2004 points.

    Health insurance premiums
Any health insurance premiums you pay, including some long-term care premiums based on your age, are potentially deductible. You have to add these, however, to your medical expense pot. Medical expenses have to exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) before they give you any tax benefit.

But if you're self-employed and not covered by any other employer-paid plan, you can deduct 100% your health insurance premiums above the line. Above the line means the expense is included in adjusted gross income and doesn't get lumped in with itemized deductions. That means that you not only don't have to exceed the 7.5% floor, you don't even have to itemize!

    Educator expenses
If you're a qualified educator, you can get an above the line deduction of as much as $250 for materials you bought in 2005. That includes books, supplies and even computer equipment. You qualify if you're a kindergarten through grade 12 teacher, aide, instructor, or principal.

This year, you got a break from Congress. The law was supposed to expire on Dec. 31, 2005. Congress has extended it retroactively.

    Student higher education expenses
One for the teachers, one for the students.

For 2005, if your adjusted gross income isn't more than $65,000 ($130,000 on a joint return), you can get an above the line deduction of as much as $4,000 for any higher education expenses you paid. That is up from $3,000.

See if you qualify for the Hope or Lifetime Learning Credit. The Hope credit is worth $1,500 per student subject to income limits. The Lifetime Learning Credit is worth $2,000 per return. Compare, and go with the one which gives you the biggest benefit.

    Clean fuel deduction
You can get another above the line deduction of up to $2,000 in 2005 and 2006 of the cost of buying a clean fuel vehicle. That's a car that uses a significant source of energy other than gasoline. The deduction falls to $1,500 in 2007 and, unless Congress renews it, will not apply to vehicles placed in service after 2007.

Hybrid cars qualify. A hybrid car combines an electric motor with a gas fueled internal combustion engine.

Cars that the IRS has blessed include the Toyota Prius, the Honda Insight and the Honda Civic Hybrid.

You get the deduction in the year you start using the car, and you must be the original owner. Take it on your Form 1040 by writing in "clean fuel."

    Investment and tax expenses
Many of us forget tax planning and investment expenses because they are part of miscellaneous itemized expenses. Their total must exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income before you get any tax benefit.

Expenses to track include your employee business expenses, tax preparation fees and even the portion of your legal or accounting fees relating to tax planning. For example, in a divorce, the legal time spent relating to the tax aspects of alimony and child support would qualify. So too would the tax aspects of estate planning.

Many people shortchange themselves on the deduction of investment expenses. They remember the safety deposit box fees. But how about the annual fee paid your broker and any IRA fees you pay directly? You may remember the cost of your investment publications on subscription -- such as Forbes, Fortune, Business Week, Worth and Barron's. But how about the investment newspapers you buy off the newsstands? You keep track of your long distance phone calls to your broker and investment adviser, but how about the mileage to go see them?

    Casualty deductions
In 2005, we had forest fires aplenty and, of course, the four hurricanes that hit Florida and the Southeast.

If President Bush declared your area a disaster area, you can claim your loss either on your 2005 return or your 2004 return. You can confirm whether you qualify on the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Web site.

Compare your 2004 return with what you expect to file for 2005 and figure out what year gets you more money. You also should get interest back to April 15, 2005. Unless your income for 2005 was substantially less than 2004, it's probably better to take the deduction in 2005. If you do qualify for a refund, you will need to file a revised tax return. For that, you will need Form 1040X.

    Retirement tax credit
This one is even better than a deduction. It's a credit -- a dollar for dollar reduction in your tax -- not just in your taxable income. And, it also can come with a deduction.

This deduction is designed to give moderate and low-income taxpayers an incentive to save for retirement.

Make a contribution into your retirement account. That money isn't taxed currently. So, it's like you got a deduction off your income. In addition, you get a credit of as much as 50% of the first $2,000 invested. That's as much as a $1,000 reduction in your tax.

You get the $1,000 tax reduction as well as the $2,000 reduction in your income. That's a nice rate of return on a $2,000 investment. Moreover, if you qualify, you can deduct as much as $3,000 in contributions to an IRA.

The tax credit disappears as your adjusted gross income increases. But singles with AGIs up to $25,000 and joint filers with AGIs up to $50,000 will qualify. The limit is $37,500 for heads of households.

Contributions to your 401(k), 403(b), SEP, traditional or Roth IRAs will qualify as well.

Will India Be Able to Keep up with the Demand for Qualified IT Workers?

The IT market in India has attracted plenty of workers and new graduates but it appears that the number of fully qualified and experienced IT help is not
keeping up with the demand. The lower numbers are pushing salaries up, as well, which puts a dent in cost-savings opportunities for outsourcing. Companies are compensating by starting their own training centers, bringing Indian expats back from the West, applying retention best practices, and aggressively recruiting from competitors. The war for talent means that Indian employers need to focus on motivating talent, as well as attracting it, says one expert.

Response Source: According to NCR research, 66 percent of British shoppers want a self-service option at the checkout; 42 percent of them are likely or very likely to consider the presence of self-service or lack thereof when deciding where to shop. This is becoming more important as people make more frequent, shorter trips to stores, another trend highlighted in the survey. An NCR executive quoted here says shoppers accustomed to online shopping are seeking similar convenience and spontaneity in their brick-and-mortar experiences. Other survey highlights: Some 56 percent want to use self-service to pre-order items, such as deli items, and collect them later. Fifty-eight percent of respondents want to be able to order items that are out of stock. Yes, NCR manufactures self-checkout systems. The stats are still interesting.

China's Five Surprises: A Guide to Doing Business in the World's Fastest-Growing Economy

    by Edward TseShanghai, January 16, 2006 --

Foreign companies conducting business in China as the country briskly transforms itself into a market economy will succeed only if they can get inside the minds of their Chinese competitors (or partners).

Five facets of business in China may surprise most outsiders:
    - Local entrepreneurs are interested in producing global brands, not just low-cost commodities
    - China has become a hotbed for rapid innovation
    - Executives from around the world are moving to China for the long haul
    - Good management and transparency are starting to count more than patronage, at least in some sectors
    - China is becoming a catalyst for growth in emerging markets throughout the developing world.

Learn to maximize your job opportunities

Learn how to maximize your job opportunities
    Staff Writer, The Career News

Recent studies show the job market improving. Hiring is definitely on the rise. If you're currently in the job market, now is the time to make sure your resume is where hiring managers will find it. Most recruiters and hiring managers first turn to one of the hundreds of career websites or resume banks to find suitable job candidates to fill their positions. That's why posting your resume on ALL the top career websites will give you the competitive advantage and maximize your job opportunities.

While there are currently millions of jobs listed amongst all the top career websites, more and more companies report they are searching the job boards for candidates without posting their upcoming jobs -- due to fear of an onslaught of unqualified applications.

According to a poll by the Society for Human Resource Management, 88% of human resource professionals now rely on the Internet to fill open positions in their organizations. That makes this the BEST time to put your resume on ALL major career websites which collectively are reported as being searched by 1.5 million employers and recruiters and hiring managers daily!

    How long does it take?

Researching which websites to post to and then filling out all of their forms will take a fair amount of time. If you don't want to spend 60 hours filling out forms and researching websites, you can turn to a great service from Resume Rabbit, which will instantly post your resume to over 75 top career websites for you.

The best part is that it takes ONLY 5 MINUTES to complete, saving you tons of time by instantly posting your resume on all the best websites like Monster, Job.com, CareerBuilder, Net-Temps, Dice & More.

Why post to all the websites?

The answer is: To be in the right places at the right times! Especially now.

While many companies search the largest career websites, increasingly employers and recruiters are cutting costs by searching the lesser expensive, mid-sized websites.

This means that the hiring managers and jobs are dispersed amongst a large number of career websites. And in this market, the window of opportunity for a job is a little smaller than usual, so it's important that you're where the jobs are when they're available.

Can I post my resume confidentially?

You can still post your resume online while remaining anonymous if you use Resume Rabbit by selecting "Post My Resume Confidentially" during their registration process. In this case they will select the confidentiality option on career websites offering that feature. For career websites that do not offer a confidentiality feature, they will replace your personally identifiable information and current company name with something non-descriptive.

    Does it really work?

It's a fact that most hiring managers use the internet to find their candidates. Of course, when there are more jobs available in the market, your chances are better of finding a job faster.

However, when the job market is weak, it's even more important that you give yourself a competitive advantage over others competing for the same jobs, by making sure your resume is "findable" on ALL top career websites.

Here are a couple of comments about being on all the career websites from users of Resume Rabbit:

A customer service representative in Missouri named Jim used Resume Rabbit to post his resume and commented,

"I signed up on a Tuesday and by Thursday the job offers started pouring in. By Friday, I had a job set up!"

Ronnie, a sales representative in Texas reports,

"I got the account on Sunday evening and by Monday morning I was already getting phone calls from recruiters. That was fast and easy. There are so many job websites out there it would have taken weeks."

Since 1999 Resume Rabbit has performed over 1 million resume postings for some very happy customers who feel the service can't be beat. Try Resume Rabbit today!

Whether you fill out the forms yourself or elect to have a service like Resume Rabbit do it for you, being on all the major career websites is a good idea. It's a competitive job market right now. If you know how to play the numbers you can beat the odds and succeed. Post your resume to as many career websites as possible and visit them often.

    Link Popularity and Press Releases

    Link Popularity and Press Releases
    By Gary Sims (c) 2006

The quantity of links to your site is used by the search engines
(like Google) to calculate the importance of your site. This
measure of incoming links is called "Link Popularity". Press
releases are a powerful way in which you can promote your site,
service or product while at the same time increasing your link
    popularity.

    Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process of fine tuning
your website to get higher rankings on Internet Search Engines
like Google, Yahoo and MSN. Broadly speaking there are two types
    of optimization, "on-page" and "off-page". On-page optimization
deals with the layout and format of a web page to make it
attractive to a search engine. Off-page optimization deals with
external factors like the number of people linking to your page.
    Let's look at off-page first.

    Off-Page Optimization

In trying to quantify the importance of a website, search engines
have developed sophisticated algorithms that rank web pages for
their quality. The largest factor in determining quality is the
number of links to a web page. Links are an almost impartial
method of determining how popular a website or a web page is. Or
to put it another way, quality websites are the most popular and
so have the most links to them. As previously mentioned this is
called "Link Popularity". So to improve your standing on the
search engine you need a higher link popularity.

Another very important factor in off-page optimization is the
text used to link to your site. This is called the anchor text.
Adobe ranks the highest in the search engines for the words
"click here". Why should that be? The word "click here" isn't in
the title of the page, nor is it in the page itself! So why does
a search engine like Google rank Adobe so high for this term?
Because many of the websites linking to Adobe used the words
"click" and "here" many times in the anchor text of their links
to Adobe. You know... Click here to download Acrobat Reader...

    Press Releases

A press release is a written communication that you submit
to journalists in the media (newspapers, radio, television,
magazines, etc.) They are used to make announcements which are
newsworthy. The mistake that many people make when writing press
releases is that they don't find the angle necessary to make
their announcement newsworthy. Press releases aren't for
customers or consumers they are for reporters, journalists who
will use them as a starting point for a larger story or feature.
Press releases written as sales pieces will be completely
    ignored.

There are various ways to submit free press releases on-line.
Some of the popular sites are:

    http://www.free-press-release-center.info
    http://www.prweb.com
    http://www.prleap.com

How can a press release help with building your link popularity?
Most of the free press release services are text-based which
means you will not be able to add any HTML tags and so you can't
add any keyword-optimized links into the press release. However
others like the Free Press Release Center (FPRC) allow you to
also supply some keywords for that press release. When that page
is viewed by someone, including the search engines, the keywords
will be used to create links within your press release back to
    your website.

    This means:

There is a one-way link to your website
The link uses the anchor text of your choice
The link is within a natural context of the press release.

Traditionally, a press release is short-lived, it has a limited
amount of time to make an impact on the media before it becomes
old news and is replaced by fresh press releases. Some services
like FPRC allow you to buy a cheap upgrade, which means your
press release will remain permanently in their system. This
means that your "in context" links with the anchor text of your
choice remain permanently for search engines to find and so help
    improve your rankings.

When preparing your press release you should optimize it for the
keywords which are important for your site, product or company.
This means that when someone searches for information in your
industry, your press release will be seen as relevant by the
    search engine.

    On-Page Optimization

There are several factors in on-page optimization. The first is
the title of the page. This is almost the first thing the search
engine reads when it visits a page. All of the free press release
services use the title of your press release as the title of the
web page. So when preparing your press release try to put some
of your important words in the headline, however don't force
them in as then you will alienate your readers (the journalists).

After the title is the heading tags on the page. Like the title
of the page, your headline will become the first heading on the
page. Again you should optimize your headline.

If you prepare an optimum press release and select good keywords
you can gain valuable incoming links to your site as well as
    gaining exposure through the media.

Before You Set up Shop in China

Before You Set up Shop in China

Small companies face a long list of worries when contemplating outsourcing in the Chinese market. First, even top players have stumbled there (example: Microsoft). Then there is the red tape; simply registering a company in China can be a 30-step process. An unreliable legal system, odd government regulations and an entirely different set of cultural norms add to the challenge. Yet with its massive workforce and cheap labor, outsourcing to China can be worth the effort. This article examines many angles of the Chinese market from the small business perspective, including industry, location, investment structure, management and intellectual property protection. Solid tips abound. For example, while maintaining a permanent presence in China is a must, a Western manager can be ineffectual. Hiring a local Chinese manager and a part-time expatriate to work together is a logical solution.

The Google Threat to MS: Consumers First, Enterprises Follow

The Google Threat to MS: Consumers First, Enterprises Follow

Consumer behavior is a big influence on IT shops, and several analysts appear to be saying that Google Pack overtly targeted at consumers is just another way for the company to break into the enterprise space. One observer says that while Bill Gates is downplaying the Google threat, IBM took largely the same tack on the fledgling Windows NT and where is OS/2 now? Web-based challenges to Microsoft's office productivity hammerlock abound, from Google's own Gmail to free calendaring software. Slow logon times are an issue, but an integrated suite like Google Pack aims to obviate some of these problems. IBM is in the mix as well, adopting the Open Document Format in its WorkPlace client package.
