Convergys Targets Financial BPO Segment
Convergys Corp.'s plan to acquire Deloitte Consulting's
business process outsourcing unit will propel the company
into a high-growth opportunity. Convergys last week signed a
deal to acquire Deloitte's Tulsa, Okla.-based unit that
focuses on finance and accounting outsourcing. Convergys'
business process outsourcing mainstay has been human
resources, so the deal would let the company expand into a
new area.

Distributor Avnet Launches IBM Blade Initiative
Distributor Avnet Partner Solutions this week launched a
blade server initiative with an eye to boosting sales of IBM
blades to the upper end of the small and midsized business
market. Avnet's blade program, called BladeCentral for IBM,
is designed to give VARs and integrators a quick entree into
a fast-growing market. Included in the program are technical
and sales training, demand generation and special financing,
said Jack Morris, the distributor's vice president of IBM
software and xSeries. To gain a foothold for IBM blades at
end-user accounts, Tempe, Ariz.-based Avnet is providing VAR
and integrator partners with a free chassis for the first
blade sale a partner makes into an account.

NetEx Recruits VARs for Data Acceleration Technology
Earlier this month, the mammoth financial services company
Citigroup had to make the embarrassing admission it was
missing a backup tape with confidential records of almost 4
million people. The tape, containing Social Security numbers
and customer transaction histories, seems to have
disappeared from a UPS truck on May 2, according to
Citigroup. Proponents of data replication technology say
such a compromising incident would not have occurred had
Citigroup been using replication technology as opposed to
backup tapes.

This Saturday, Soul of our Feet, People of Color Dance Festival
Celebrate the works of the Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center at the Soul of our Feet, People of Color Dance Festival 2005. This month long celebration of culture and dance will feature groundbreaking performances by Grace Chapman, Echoes of Inner Voices Women DanceMakers Company on June 25th, Mixed Nuts on June 30th. All performances will take place at the Long Island University Triangle Theater located at Flatbush and Dekalb Avenues, Brooklyn, NY and start at 8pm. Tickets are $15/ $12 (students and seniors). Tickets may be purchased by phone at 718-875-9710. THELMA HILL PERFORMANCE ARTS CENTER BACKGROUND In 1976, visionary Larry Phillips brought a group of committed dancers and choreographers together to create an organization, which would offer the Brooklyn community a creative performance outlet that is not only experimental and cultural but family oriented as well. He named the young talented group of artists after brilliant educator and dancer, Thelma Hill. Over the past 29 years, Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center (THPAC) has been a staple in the Brooklyn Summer Arts Season, providing dancers with a forum where they can explore their art and share it with a diverse community. THPAC has developed exceptional programs, on in which their “ alumni”, who have gone on to successful careers as dancers and choreographers, both here and abroad, return to the space where they once flourished, to impart what they have learned onto new artists. Located in the Triangle Theater of Long Island University in downtown Brooklyn, the Thelma Hill season runs throughout the month of June, has a reach of 14,000 people through its yearly mailer, email, and physical audience. It is one of the most exceptional multi-cultural institutions of dance and the performing arts in New York City. With tickets being only $15, the June=THPAC Souls of our Feet People of Color Dance Festival is widely attended by the dance community and New Yorkers who take part in summer city cultural affairs. Although THPAC has been in existence for many years, this may be the center’s final season due to limited funding. With adequate support and funding, THPAC can continue to provide opportunities for artists of all backgrounds and create programs that will allow them to enhance their skills and talents. ### Michelle Stoddart ElleDeuce Communications Marketing & Event Planning 917.597.8084 347-615-1374 | |

There I was, writing a response to Baseline's excellent package
on the spread of bad data and how data brokers such as
ChoicePoint are so very cavalier about innocent people winding
up in jail because of it, in the middle of getting all steamed up
about the people who greedily suck up information and spew it
out at great profit with no regard for its accuracy or the intent of
its purchasers, when the phone rang.
"Hello, I'm so-and-so from blah-blah media tracking company,
and we want to update our information on you," was the rapid-fire
introduction.
The bristles on my neck stood straight up. More people, wanting
more information, disseminating it all over the globe, with not a care
in the world for my privacy or potential identity theft. Luckily, I
recovered my wits in time to update my information as
a media contact -- which, after all, is a professional obligation
that ensures that news can actually get to me -- instead of
ripping the caller a new one.
Read my suggestions on how bad bad data is really going to get
when dirty databases get linked, and make sure to check out
Baseline's package. It will leave you primed to wage war over
protecting your own data, as was I.
Read Lisa's column on the issue.

1. News: The Growing Odor of Bad Data
An innocent man is thrown in jail to rot for a week after a new
employer's background check depicted him as a child molester
and rapist, all thanks to identity theft: namely, the theft of his
Social security number and birth certificate years ago. Think it
would be easy to clean up the mistake? No way, Jose, not with
the powers that be investing their faith in data aggregators and
brokers such as ChoicePoint, who in turn throw up their hands
and say lousy data isn't their fault. Check out the whole Baseline
package to learn how spotty data checking is and how customers
are paying the costs.

1. News: Auto-Parts Chain Goes Modern, Stays Frugal
When the CIO of $1.6 billion auto-parts chain CSK Auto decided
the stores needed a major tech refresh, he wanted electricity via
Ethernet, multimedia displays suspended from the ceiling and an
all-Linux environment. But no RFID.

2. News: Sears, CSC Launch Word War
Sears and Computer Sciences are at war over two words:
"cause" vs. "convenience." This is no mere dictionary debate.
Millions of dollars in termination fees are at stake as Sears ends
a $1.6 billion, 10-year agreement to use computer, server, voice
and data services from CSC--one year after inking the deal.

4. News: The Rising Threat from Bad Data
Commercially available data is rife with errors, whether critical or
not, and many have no formal process to check for mistakes other
than to wait for clients to complain. Added to the danger of mistakes
is the risk that the identity thieves can simply buy the information
they need from ChoicePoint and other companies, which admit to
having been scammed by fraudsters in Nigeria and elsewhere.

5. News: Oracle Shakes Up North American Sales
Reshuffling its North American sales organization is Oracle's
latest bid in an ongoing campaign to file down the teeth of its
infamously carnivorous sales force. The campaign has taken on
new urgency as the database giant seeks to digest its recent
acquisitions of PeopleSoft and Retek without scaring off customers
or partners.

June 16, 2005
CIO Insider - Your Guide to What's New on CIO.com
Managing Assets -- Digital and Otherwise
As organizations struggle to keep track of PowerPoints and press
releases, employee knowledge and worker mindset, there's an
increasing array of tools to help. Among the latest acronyms you
need to know: DAM and SNA.
In this issue:
1. DAM: Digital Asset Management Case Study
2. DAM: PowerPoint and Architecture
3. DAM: A Backgrounder
4. SNA: Social Network Analysis at Work
5. SNA: A Sample SNA Report
6. SNA: Take SNA For a Test Drive

1. Digital Asset Management Case Study
The inability to track audio, video, text and image assets
efficiently often leads to wasted effort and higher costs. To
solve this problem, public broadcaster WGBH turned to a digital
asset management (DAM) system, a combination of hardware and
software that serves as a centralized catalog.

2. PowerPoint and Architecture
WGBH Chief Technologist Dave MacCarn shares his PowerPoint
presentation on the broadcaster's DAM system. It includes a
comprehensive view of the system's architecture.

3. A Backgrounder on DAM
General-purpose relational databases have long been able to store
and retrieve unstructured information as "blobs," or binary large
objects. Yet there's a difference between simply storing and
retrieving digital riches, and doing something useful with them.

4. Social Network Analysis at Work
Food giant Mars wanted to improve its sprawling research and
development division's ability to innovate. Top executives were
concerned that their scientists weren't networking enough with
outside colleagues. To find out who was working with whom and how
scientists were getting new ideas, they decided to map the
group's professional contacts using a process called social
network analysis (SNA).

5. A Sample SNA Report
This survey report, from Rob Cross, assistant professor of
business at the University of Virginia and an SNA expert, looks
at the network of colleagues, advisors and direct reports for a
fictitious employee. Included are action plans for improving her
connections.

Resilience Report: Spinning Gold With the Outsourced Sales Force
Making the Most of "Feet on the Street"
by Edward Landry and Jaya Pandrangi
Faced with the need to keep the prices of their goods low and burdened by the rising expenses of promoting and marketing their brands, many consumer products manufacturers have looked to cut costs in field merchandising -- the sales force members who travel to individual stores to place products and to negotiate for better display presence. Outsourcing most or all of its merchandising force can cut a company's merchandising costs by 50 percent. But those benefits may be frittered away, unless the CPG firm teaches its "feet on the street" three critical steps.
