1. Digital Asset Management Case Study
The inability to track audio, video, text and image assets
efficiently often leads to wasted effort and higher costs. To
solve this problem, public broadcaster WGBH turned to a digital
asset management (DAM) system, a combination of hardware and
software that serves as a centralized catalog.

2. PowerPoint and Architecture
WGBH Chief Technologist Dave MacCarn shares his PowerPoint
presentation on the broadcaster's DAM system. It includes a
comprehensive view of the system's architecture.

3. A Backgrounder on DAM
General-purpose relational databases have long been able to store
and retrieve unstructured information as "blobs," or binary large
objects. Yet there's a difference between simply storing and
retrieving digital riches, and doing something useful with them.

4. Social Network Analysis at Work
Food giant Mars wanted to improve its sprawling research and
development division's ability to innovate. Top executives were
concerned that their scientists weren't networking enough with
outside colleagues. To find out who was working with whom and how
scientists were getting new ideas, they decided to map the
group's professional contacts using a process called social
network analysis (SNA).

5. A Sample SNA Report
This survey report, from Rob Cross, assistant professor of
business at the University of Virginia and an SNA expert, looks
at the network of colleagues, advisors and direct reports for a
fictitious employee. Included are action plans for improving her
connections.

6. Take SNA For a Test Drive
You can get a peek at your own personal network. To access the
University of Virginia site for the survey, you need to request
an access log-in. Please allow 24 hours, Mon.-Fri., and be sure
to put "CIO magazine SNA Survey Request" in the subject line. The
e-mail address is SocialNetwork@comm.virginia.edu.
