Ask the right questions to land the position you want
Abridged: The News-Press

LOS ANGELES, CA -- In a job interview, sometimes it's not your answers that land you the job - it's your questions. While an interviewer may ask you dozens of questions, what really sets you apart from the other candidates is by making your own queries. In fact, some interviewers automatically toss out the person who doesn't ask anything. It's a quick and easy way to narrow down a list of job candidates.

Interviewers are looking for questions that show some deeper interest in the company and the position. Remember that during this process, the interviewer will be watching to see not only if you're a good listener, but if your interest is genuine. By making the interview more of a conversation between two people, rather than an interrogation, the interviewer will be left with an impression of you as a mature professional who has the ability to relate well with others.

If you think you'll get so nervous that you can't remember even one question to ask, prepare a list before the interview. "You've done a great job reviewing all the information for me, but I just want to go over a couple of things to make sure I've got it all," you can say.

Personal career marketing plan
Doug Franklin, EPIC Business Strategies LLC

CELEBRATION, FL -- Job seekers need to create a plan to "market" themselves to prospective employers. Take the time to clearly think through your own Personal Career "Marketing" Plan and then work the plan to achieve your goals. Start by thinking of your job search like you would if you were working for a company marketing a new product or service. If you were creating a marketing plan for a new widget, what would the plan include? Try completing a plan for your job search with the following elements:

  • Resume: Create a professional resume
  • Marketing Materials: Establish professional marketing materials for your career search. Business cards, resume, portfolio of past accomplishments, etc.
  • Exposure: Market yourself everywhere: Internet job boards, email campaigns, alumni groups, local networking meetings.
  • Networking: Fire up your network and get out there. Network with every person you meet.
  • Research: Start researching how you will seek out opportunities on the internet.
  • Action Plan: Create an action plan and get to work.
The final success of your Personal Career Marketing Plan effort is of course the achievement of your next great job opportunity. Create the plan, work the plan, measure your results, stay focused, and market yourself with a plan.

Quick Fix: A job fair strategy
Abridged: JobJournal.com

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The next time you attend a job fair, try this proven process:

1) Arrive early. 2) Pick a booth that looks intriguing, read its signage and handouts. 3) If you are interested, extend your hand and give the recruiter a five-second pitch. For example, "Hi. I'm Jane Jones. I'm a Java programmer with three years of experience." 4) If the conversation is a dead end, conclude with, "Any advice for me?" If, on the other hand, the conversation leads you to believe you have a shot at working there, upon leaving the booth, jot down some details you can use in the thank-you note you'll write later that day.

Repeat steps 2-4 until you've run out of prospective employers.

Women gaining ground in workplace
Abridged: The Orange County Register

ANAHEIM, CA -- Things have come a long way for women in the workplace over the years and they seem to be getting even better, according to the latest data from the Current Population Survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to the BLS, between 1970 and 2004 women increased their presence in the labor force from 43 to 59.2 percent. Women have also made substantial inroads into higher-paying occupations. For example, in 2004 half of all management, professional and related occupations were held by women.

Meanwhile, the gap between the earnings of women and men are closing. From 1979 to 2004, women's earnings as compared to men's climbed from 62 to 80 percent. This movement has gone hand in hand with womens pursuit of higher education. By 2004 33 percent of women ages 25 to 64 held a college degree as compared to 11 percent in 1970.

Women are also increasing the share of the household income that they provide. In 1973, wives' earnings accounted for 26 percent of their families' incomes. By 2003 that share had grown to 35 percent. More women are out earning their husbands, too. In 1987, 18 percent of working wives, who's husbands also worked, earned more than their spouses; in 2003, this proportion was 25 percent, per the BLS.

Retail hiring frenzy begins as holidays approach
Abridged: OCJobFinder.com

ORANGE COUNTY, CA -- It may seem too early in the year to think about the holiday season, but if you're hoping to take advantage of the boost in jobs that occurs in the retail sector, it's time to start looking. The traditional holiday shopping rush kicks off on the day after Thanksgiving, but employers are already looking for qualified candidates to help them during the holiday season.

According to the National Retail Federation, the holiday season generates anywhere from 25 to 40 percent of many retailers' annual sales. This boost in sales creates a need for additional workers. In recent years, the retail segments that showed the greatest seasonal growth have been stores featuring clothing, general-merchandise, sporting-goods, books, music, stationery and novelties.

Once you find the job you are looking for, be sure to give the employer your best work. Although most holiday jobs do not lead to permanent work, your employer could become a reference for a future job. Little things like being on time for each shift and being self-motivated will go a long way with your employer. If you have had a good rapport with your supervisor, ask for a letter of recommendation.
