based on information from the trade publication Multichannel

market wireless services with Comcast, Time Warner Cable and
Cox Communications. These are the top three operators, with
more than 48 million subscribers. Cable operators have long
been hamstrung by their lack of a wireless service element.
One option was to use their basic infrastructure to build
a cable-specific service. This is a very expensive way to
go. For some time, the assumption was that an operator or
operators would partner with a cellular company. That speculation
may be close to coming true. The deal, which may or may not
include a Wi-Fi element, could be announced as early as this
week.

Techworld: Wi-Fi started with single access points (APs). Once WLANs began being deployed by corporations, vendors began thinking of ways to link the APs together. "Fat" APs, in which all intelligence is replicated in each device, aren't practical. An early attempt at group management of APs, the lightweight access point protocol (LWAPP), didn't catch on. It eventually was subsumed by another standards effort, called the control and provisioning of wireless access points (CAPWAP). The market has evolved as former skeptic Cisco now owns Airespace, the company that developed the protocol. That, and changes to the standard itself, have put LWAPP on the top of the list of protocols that will be used in CAPWAP.

It is easy to see how this technology could be used in a corporate setting to, for instance, make data specific to a particular department more readily available to WLAN users in that area of the building or corporate campus. This piece focuses on whether certain consumer devices should be banned from corporate settings because of the security risks they pose. It ends with a sure-fire approach to making sure employees don't download data: A low-level tech was seen walking through one company's offices using Super Glue to permanently shut the USB ports of company laptops and PCs. The piece, which doesn't appear to endorse that approach, discusses the problem of portable storage devices (such as iPods and memory sticks) and camera phones. The phones can photograph sensitive documents or take pictures that can be doctored to make the company look like it is liable for something that didn't really occur. Companies, of course, should train employees. Beyond this, software programs are available that will give IT departments some control over the I/O ports of computers.

APs and the WLANs with which they are associated connect to each other over radio frequency (RF) signals. This primer on how the process works provides advice for engineers in designing the most efficient RF layout. The trick is to ensure that contiguous APs are set to different RF channels so that performance-affecting midair data collisions are avoided. Using the same RF frequency also can make roaming from one AP to another more difficult. The article also provides tips, such as switching the channel from the factory default (channel 6), even in a single AP setup. Other users generally won't switch from channel 6, so the same problems won't be experienced.

SearchMobileComputing.com:
It's no secret that many members of the mobile workforce are not technically adept. Moving through several screens, particularly on small-screen devices, may discourage them from attempting the communications at all. Intellisync's InfoBOT Platform may be a way around this complexity. It creates instant messages that easily provide requested information to users. So, for instance, instead of checking an airplane's departure status by going to the airline's site and scrolling through several screens, the user can simply enter the flight number on the InfoBOT and wait for the answer. The InfoBOT is comprised of three elements: the server, the client and a network operations center that gathers the requested information. Little training is necessary.

3 QUESTIONS:
The Smallest Shall Lead Them

With Jim Balcom, president, PolyFuel Inc. Balcom recently spoke at the Ninth Grove Fuel Cell Symposium in London.

Question:
Your position is that mobile applications, not stationary or automotive, will drive the fuel cell market. Is that the common feeling?
Balcom: I'm not the only one saying that. At the wrap-up of the conference ... the panel moderator for the panel I was speaking on made the point that portable fuel cells will be the first application. The learning coming from that will spill over to the automotive and the transportation fuel cells. That was reinforced by the other panel chairpeople. They virtually reinforced the same point.

Question:
Why is portable ahead?
Balcom: The cost targets are much easier to meet than in the automotive or stationary [sectors]. In portable, you are competing against lithium-ion, which still has a relatively high cost. So the cost targets are easier to hit in portable. The second reason is durability. The durability target in portable electronics is in the 2,000- to 3,000-hour range. Most people lose a device before that. In automotive, [fuel cells have] to last for 10 years; in stationary, for 40,000 or 80,000 hours of run time. It's tough for fuel cells to reach those higher durability targets. The third reason is the fuel infrastructure for portable cells. They will be methanol fuel cells, [which will cost] pennies. So the cost structure is easy to meet for methanol. The complexity of the fuel cartridge is less than the complexity of a disposable butane lighter. Companies like Bic and Duracell want to get into the business. The fourth reason is the regulatory requirements. In
order to enable the technology, efforts began with the UN in 2004, with a decision that set the rules in motion. The ICAO [International Civil Aviation Organization] considered it in 2004. The next step is the IEC [International Electro-Technical Commission] in 2006. Reason number five has to do with market dynamics. The demand for longer run time power supplies is very strong, unlike in automotive and stationary, where [the drivers] are not so clear. In portable electronics, application people very much want longer run times. The device makers, for their part, can build devices that have more functionality. The wireless carriers, for their part, can deliver content, can deliver television to handsets. The missing link is that the battery makers cannot supply enough energy in a small package. The final point is that the market kinetics in portable market are very fast. The move from generation to generation of new devices is very quick. That will help speed adoption of new technology.

Question:
What do you see as the time line?
Balcom: We're taking a view that 2005 and 2006 will be the years of the test market introductions; 2006 and 2007 will be years of early and niche markets like military and some industrial applications; while 2007 and 2008 will be the commercial launch. That coincides with the conservative projections of our customers, who we consider to be the major fuel cell developers.

Reuters:
Research In Motion (RIM) may soon be forced to stop selling its popular BlackBerry device. In 2002, RIM lost a patent infringement suit to a company called NTP. The next year, NTP won an injunction against the sale of BlackBerries, though the injunction was stayed pending an appeal. The appeals court scaled back the ruling, but agreed with the finding that some patents had been violated. Last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit denied RIM's motion to stay the case until the U.S. Supreme Court decided whether to get involved. The case now goes back to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. NTP plans to ask the court to confirm the injunction, which could lead to the sales shutdown. A shutdown, however, wouldn't affect BlackBerries used by federal personnel. The commentary says that there was almost a settlement between NTP and RIM, and that it is possible that a settlement will be reached before RIM would be forced to stop sales.

Ars Technica:
Researchers from 14 organizations have successfully used a 12,000-cubic-meter weather balloon hovering at 24 kilometers to transmit a steady stream of data at 11 Mbps. The demonstration is a step toward the goal of using the balloons to transmit data at 120 Mbps. The article acknowledges that the use of weather balloons to transmit data sounds a bit strange, but then gives background that makes it seem less odd. For one thing, cable and fiber reach only a small portion of the world's population. Geosynchronous satellite transmissions are far more expensive than the balloons and suffer latency — delivery delays — caused by their distance from earth. Stratospheric balloons can cost less than one-tenth of a satellite and can conceivably support a thousand times as many users. BT and the European Union are among the partners in the project.

Cingular Wireless and OZ Communications have signed a deal under which the mobile carrier will offer its customers Mobile E-mail and Mobile IM services. The services will allow subscribers with the right handset access to e-mail downloads from AOL Mail, MSN Hotmail, SBC/Yahoo!, Yahoo! and MSN. The services, which will be driven by OZ's Mobile E-mail Solution, will be free to subscribers with a Cingular data plan. The idea is to drive portable e-mail services to the consumer segment and enable access on more basic devices. The service will feature OZ-branded mobile e-mail clients that will either come embedded in devices or as a download.

This update on Wi-Fi security opens with a good deal of background. Until the middle of 2003, security was provided by the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) protocol. This standard, however, could easily be cracked. In November of 2002, the Wi-Fi Alliance released a replacement, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA). Last year, the organization introduced 802.11i, which is a full replacement for WEP and includes WPA. A follow-on standard, WPA 2, is available now. The piece goes into significant detail on all these standards, and is a good refresher on the complex area. It also offers advice to enterprises seeking to protect their WLANs.

PolyFuel:
The fuel cell market will be driven by mobile devices such as PDAs and laptops, according to this release. Fuel cell technology for stationary and automotive applications, says the president and CEO of PolyFuel, isn't as mature. Fuel cells for portable devices, however, are almost ready: They are affordable and performance has matured. The biggest advantage is that demand is growing as power requirements of laptops, PDAs and other devices outstrips batteries' ability to fulfill them. The supply chain also is in place, he says. A remaining obstacle is rules against carrying fuel cells on airplanes. This problem is expected to disappear within the next 18 months. This arrival of the market is being accepted by big players that are helping to drive fuel cell research.

Mobile Satellite Ventures:
The ramifications of Hurricane Katrina, not to mention the other hurricanes that followed during the busy season, continue to be felt. One of the major problems was that communications broke down both during and after the storm. A study by Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV) says that a new approach to emergency communications is necessary. The optimal system, according to the report, should be flexible and subsume existing public safety land mobile radio systems into a broader landscape that includes satellite, terrestrial and wireless networking. New techniques that enable agile switching between networks can make such systems possible. IT departments should follow changes to emergency communications networks because they will undoubtedly affect the amount and location of available spectrum.
