Insider trading may be on the rise

An analysis commissioned by the Financial Times suggests that insider trading may have increased in lock step with the recent mergers-and-acquisitions boom. The study found that nearly 60% of the 27 big deals announced so far this year were preceded by unexplained spikes in trading volume. "You need to trade quicker, search for additional facts. Sometimes that induces illegal behavior," said John Coffee, a Columbia University law professor.
