NAS Moving into the Large Enterprise

NAS Moving into the Large Enterprise

Network attached storage has long been popular among SMBs because of its low cost, ease of management, multiplatform support and common Ethernet connectivity. Now, NAS is making inroads into larger enterprises, where it is being used for file server consolidation, disk-to-disk backup and storage consolidation for satellite offices. Several large SAN (storage area network) vendors, including EMC, Hitachi, HP and IBM, now offer midrange to large-scale standalone NAS systems as well as NAS-to-SAN gateways to satisfy companies' growing need for shared, file-level storage. Companies switching from direct attached storage to NAS to cut management complexities and cost find that it allows them to pool disk resources, yielding greater availability, scalability and control. EMC has introduced two new NAS devices, the Celerra NS704, which can scale up to 48 TB, and the NS350, which can scale up to 10 TB and supports both Fibre Channel and ATA drives.
