Hesitant Companies Take Heat out of On-Demand CRM Offerings

Saleforce.com struck a chord (and apparently a raw nerve) in the CRM space with its on-demand offerings. The big three in the space, Microsoft, SAP and Oracle/Siebel have added on-demand services to complement their on-premises CRM solutions, and the latter two were not above talking a little trash at the recent Gartner CRM Summit. They pointed out that Salesforce.com caters to smaller companies that have fewer regulatory requirements to worry about. Even though the on-demand plus on-premises model makes the most sense � it worked in Blockbuster's fight to edge out Netflix, after all � analysts note that the "best of both worlds" scenario hasn't quite taken root. Vendors will need to increase education efforts before existing obstacles are overcome.
