Black Economic Empowerment: The Making of a Black Middle Class

"I want to be a pilot. If I work very hard I can be a pilot," says Sadan, 15, who lives in South Africa's Alexandra Township. This is one of Johannesburg's oldest black townships, where more than 400,000 people live on less than three square miles of land.

Just 12 years ago, the idea of an Alexandra youth becoming a pilot would have been nearly impossible under the apartheid government. Alexandra, founded in 1912, was one of the designated "native townships" reserved for black housing. It is where thousands of families still live in tin and wooden shacks, grim reminders of apartheid. Change, however, is taking place in Alexandra, as it is throughout South Africa.
