Built-In Approach to Network Security

Cisco and Microsoft are rolling out new security architectures that break from the tradition of operating open networks and trying to keep the bad guys out in favor of allowing access only to a select few invitees. It's an approach expected to become more common, and ultimately to improve network security. Expert Herbert H. Thompson says that to comply with regulations and meet companies' security needs, developers will need to build security into their products rather than adding it afterwards. Traditional security methods like the secure sockets layer (SSL) no longer appear to do the trick when it comes to protecting applications. Also problematic: acceptable user policies. While seven out of 10 companies agree they are essential to operating secure networks, 40 percent admit the policies are not enforced in their workplaces.
