Yahoo Adds RSS to E-Mail Service

RSS really is taking over the world. Now Yahoo plans to add
syndication capabilities to its upcoming Web 2.0-based e-mail
service. Why RSS? In part to help with the comfort factor,
but also as an interface with the inbox. The possibilities
can be amazing. Our story details when you can see RSS in
Yahoo's e-mail service, and speculates about Gmail, Hotmail
and others.

RSS Comes to Yahoo Mail:

RSS Is Dead

That's what Lance Ulanoff thinks, but not in the way you
might surmise. He thinks the term RSS will go away, not the
underlying XML functionality. Why is RSS obsolete? It has a
lot to do with retail, and the fact that e-commerce has yet
to really embrace the technology. His story has lots more
details--read it and see if you agree.

RSS Needs to Die:

Expect Worms to Target RSS

RSS might not really be dead, but it provides an attractive
vector for malware authors. Researchers at Trend Micro expect
feed hijacking to become commonplace, especially after the
RSS-enabled Internet Explorer 7 ships. How will malware
authors do the dirty deed? What can you do about it? Our
story explores this frightening possibility: RSS might not
be as safe as you think.

Worms Coming for RSS:

Tempe Launches Citywide Wi-Fi Network

It's enough to make you move to Arizona (besides the sunset
and the lizards). The town of Tempe cut the ribbon on a
40-square-mile wireless hot spot, delivering Wi-Fi access to
all residents and businesses. You can roam freely around the
city, and the company that built the network even claims
"pre-WiMax-ready" capability, whatever that means. Check out
our story for more details. It's enough to make even a desert
iguana smile!

BlackBerry Shutdown May Be Imminent

Do you use a BlackBerry? If so, you might have to go cold
turkey after all. A judge on Wednesday refused to delay a
patent infringement case, and rejected a settlement--which
means that RIM might have to just take the U.S. operation
offline. Our story has more details, but it might be time to
find a backup way to get your "CrackBerry."

Microsoft Rolls Out New Security Tool

It's called OneCare, and it wraps up a wide range of consumer
security tools, including virus scanning, firewall and
backup. The product is still being beta tested, but the
company has rolled it out to more than 15,000 testers. What's
in the tool? How did beta testers like it? Where can you
find out more? Our story, of course, along with links and
quotes and additional details.

First Look at Vista's Media Center

Remember "Windows for Workgroups"? This special version of
Windows 3.1 included native networking support. A year or
two later, the special features were rolled into the base
Windows product, and "WfW" disappeared. It looks like the
same thing is about to happen with the "Media Center"
edition of Windows XP. When Vista comes out, MCE will
simply be a part of the operating system. But what will the
MCE functionality look like? We take a closer look at Vista's
MCE capabilities in a detailed preview, complete with lots
of pictures. Could this be the home interface of the future?

bang-for-buck MCE PC. You don't have to buy it off the shelf:

Blogger Turned Back at U.S. Border

Are you a blogger? Do you pour your heart out online? Don't
expect it to go unnoticed, especially by the federales. A
blogger recently tried to get into the United States from
Canada and was turned away at the border after immigration
agents read through his blog. Why? Our story explores the
details of this international incident--and let this be a
warning to you bloggers everywhere: Uncle Sam is reading.

How much is Microsoft losing on every 360 it sells? That's
still unclear, but we now know that expensive Samsung memory

Microsoft Developing Google Base Competitor

It's the war of the classifieds! Google has its new Google
Base, and now Microsoft has announced Fremont--a listings
competitor. What makes Fremont special? Is it deep enough to
compete with Google Base? Who loses as a result of this
listings war? Our story explores the technology and the
ramifications of this new front in the search engine wars.

Sony Releases a Fascinating Music Player

I took an earlier Sony MP3 player to task last week, calling
it one of the worst products of 2005. So I have to give some
major props to the company for learning from its mistakes and
coming out with a new flash player that's far, far better.
This new player has a wonderful design and an amazing
battery life. It even includes a tiny OLED screen inside.
The player's not perfect--the buttons and controls still
need work. But it's actually worth the price. Check out our
review, ogle the pictures and find out just how long the
battery lasted. Here's a hint: longer than two days!
