Security: Is It Time to Regulate the ISP Industry?
Because ISPs control the pipes through which information is
delivered, many customers, including CIOs, insist that
service providers must play a more active role in securing
the traffic that they deliver. After all, what's at stake
is the viability of the Internet as a medium for commerce,
communication and business connectivity into the 21st
century and beyond. Read "Seeing No Evil" for the full
picture.

1. File Sharing: Spies in the Server Closet
The Supreme Court might have stirred up a bigger problem
than it settled when it ruled last June that file-sharing
networks such as Grokster could be sued if their members
pirated copyrighted digital music and video.

2. Spying: Your Keyboard May Tell All
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have
developed software that can analyze the sounds of someone
typing on a keyboard for 10 minutes and then piece together
as much as 96 percent of what was typed.

3. Hardware Emulation: Poised to Strike, Maybe
New technology allows software compiled for one processor
and OS to run on another, with changes in neither source
nor binary code. In other words, it's a hardware emulator,
although its creators are careful not to mention the word
emulation--hardly surprising given the number of failed
attempts that litter IT's history books. (From our cousin
publication CIO New Zealand.)
