HR Faces Fallout from Rift in U.S. Labor Movement Observers differ on whether a faction's push to reform the labor movement will splinter and weaken organized labor or ultimately result in a resurgence of the movement. But most say that, at least in the short term, the reinvigorated movement will have plenty of repercussions for HR professionals. Expect a jump in organizing in the non-union sector and more aggressive and creative approaches to collective bargaining and labor-management relations in union organizations, among other changes. Congress Set To Work on Key HR-Related Issues After a month-long recess, Congress is set to reconvene on Sept. 6 with several HR-related issues high on its fall agenda. The foremost legislative issue facing Congress will be passage of appropriations legislation. Among the bills yet to be approved is the funding package for the Department of Labor. In addition, pensions and health care are among the significant issues to be debated during the coming months. (SHRM Members Only)

Disaster Relief for Employees When employees face catastrophic events such as a natural disaster or serious illness, employers often attempt to alleviate their problems in various ways. Using emergency relief funds or emergency loans, employers can assist employees who face hardship as a result of natural disasters, personal tragedies or other extenuating circumstances. Other employers sponsor "leave donation" programs. SHRM's Express Request service can provide members with information about leave-sharing programs.
