00796733 The Latest News from SHRM H-1B Applications for Next Fiscal Year Reach Limit The number of applications filed for H-1B visas for fiscal 2006 has already reached the legal limit, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced Aug. 12. This is the first time the cap has been reached before the start of the new fiscal year, which for the federal government begins Oct. 1.
Bankruptcy Law Could Help HR A sweeping new bankruptcy law that goes into effect Oct. 17 is causing a rush of filings. But legal experts say that for HR professionals and payroll administrators, the law ultimately might mean less paperwork and reduced potential for angry employees. The reason: It will require fewer surprise wage garnishments and instead more streamlined court orders that employees agreed on in advance when they filed for personal bankruptcy. (SHRM Members Only)
Congress May Regulate Executive Retirement Packages The House and Senate versions of pension reform legislation include provisions that would prohibit companies with significantly underfunded pension plans from providing full retirement benefits to top executives. According to supporters, the measures seek to eliminate a double standard and hold executives accountable for the performance of their company's pension plans for rank-and-file employees. Study Documents Pain's Impact on Workplace Pain takes its toll on the workplace as well as the body, affecting nearly one in three employees and costing one organization three and two-thirds lost workdays per employee per month, according to a newly released study.

RESEARCH SHRM Survey Downplays Impact of FLSA Reform An SHRM survey, issued a year after the U.S. Department of Labor first implemented revised rules for overtime pay eligibility, finds that the rules have not stripped many workers of their right to overtime. Only a fraction of 1 percent of employees represented by the HR professionals surveyed for the report had their status changed from nonexempt to exempt under the rules.
