This 2 part event, including the The Art of Telling Your Story workshop and the ATP Corporate Partnering Forums, is sponsored by the US Department of Commerce NIST’s Advanced Technology Program (ATP). Created in 1990, ATP is a public-private partnership that provides cost share funds to for-profit companies for high-risk, enabling research and development. Companies submit projects to ATP in response to an announced competition. To receive funding, the proposed project must be high risk, feasible, have an excellent R&D plan, show that they have attempted to obtain funding from other sources, have large social and economic benefits, and have a pathway to commercialization.
Since 1990, ATP has invested $2 billion (with an additional $2 billion in industry matching funds) in over 720 team-based projects comprised of over 1400 companies - where over half have been small businesses. To further nurture and grow these investments, ATP is sponsoring workshops and other resources to help these ventures turn their ideas into commercial realities. Day 1: The Art of Telling Your Story™
This ATP event will provide unique insights, techniques, and contacts to help you establish corporate partnerships, your #1 success factor to commercialize your technology. The first day, "The Art of Telling You Story", prepares you to attract investors and Corporate Partners in ways you have not been able to in the past. The second day, Corporate Partnering Forum, provides you with unique insights, lessons and techniques for building strategic alliances (co-development, licensing, OEM, funding, marketing, manufacturing, acquisition). Plus, network with entrepreneurs, corporations, investors, local support groups, universities and others. Includes an interactive panel session and roundtable on corporate partnering.
• Dynamic national half-day workshop on how to present to investors, corporate partners, and customers. Past participants have made significant improvements in their pitch, helping them raise over $500 M and do dozens of partnering deals. Also learn about commercialization. •
Presenting yourself and your company to investors, corporate partners, customers, and employees is the gateway to business success. But do you know how to make your company come alive so people want to invest in you? In this unique interactive workshop, learn how to turn your pitch into a powerful story that will open doors as you grow your business.
This workshop will improve your business and your ability to get people interested in investing in your company. You also get free consulting on your business strategy and deal making. And we may be able to give you some leads and contacts to investors and corporate partners. At the workshop, you also get to meet with a couple investors and ask them questions.
But you say " I already do a lot of presenting"...
Many entrepreneurs think that just because they have done a lot of presentations that they are good at it. That’s like saying if I shoot 1,000 free throws at a hoop then I am a good shooter. What if only 10 shots go in? We have shared these techniques and tricks with hundreds of entrepreneurs around the United States. We work with start-ups that have raised tens of millions of dollars in venture capital, have gotten acquired, and gone public. The skills you will learn and get to practice at "The Art of Telling Your Story" workshop are techniques that have helped these successful entrepreneurs.
Workshop format…
You will give a 10-minute, nonproprietary PowerPoint presentation as if you were pitching to potential investors or partners. The workshop coach and fellow participants then give you 30 minutes of personalized tips on how to make your pitch more compelling, along with feedback on your business strategy. Further, you will learn just as much -- maybe even more -- watching others tell their story and from networking.
What you will learn…
- Why Less is More
- Avoid mistakes that turn off investors and corporate partners
- Produce compelling slides that support you, not drown you
- Preempt risks and concerns
- Effectively use props and examples
- Gain new insights and direction for your business plan and strategy
- Presentation tips to control your audience
You will get to practice and receive personal coaching on "telling your story" to investors and corporate partners, as well as gain new insights about your business strategy, funding realities, team issues, corporate partnering, sales techniques, market positioning, and negotiating deals.
Workshop Materials…
"The Art of Telling Your Story," a concise, creative, real-world guide full of investor-tested presentation tips, insights and tricks
"ATP Power Tips," a unique collection of audio tips from dynamic information-packed discussions with investors and entrepreneurs
"Commercialization and Business Planning Guide," a 260-page book on business development, fundraising, and licensing
"Making Money With Your Technology," the online version of this published guidebook for start-ups and entrepreneurs written by Rick King, the workshop coach
