Six Sigma for Project Managers

Six Sigma for Project Managers
by Bob Tarne, PMP

Six Sigma has become a hot industry trend lately. What is it and how can it help project management?

First the mathematical part, for those of you that didn't take any advanced statistics classes during college (and be glad you didn't!). From a purely mathematical standpoint the phrase Six Sigma has to do with standard distribution around a mean. OK, that's a mouthful already! I'm not going to try to explain the math (hey, I slept during those statistics classes), but the bottom line is that Six Sigma means 3.4 defects per million opportunities. So if you're a Six Sigma organization that is producing widgets, you will only have 3.4 defects for each million widgets you make. If you're talking about the engines on commercial aircraft, such as GE makes, don't you feel better knowing GE is a Six Sigma organization?
