Redeye VC: In a blog posting that seems to have touched a collective nerve, this venture capitalist makes the point that many emerging Web 2.0 companies are making a huge mistake by ignoring middle America — "average" technology users — to focus on only the savviest techies. The problem, he says, is that this isn't exactly a huge audience. He puts the number at 53,651, not coincidentally the same as the subscriber base for Michael Arrington's TechCrunch blog feed. He further posits that usage logs of the top 10 Web 2.0 properties would yield many of the same active users. What he is seeking, he says, is big ideas that will appeal to a non-geek audience.
