The End is Not-so-Nigh (RFID & You)

Baltimore, Maryland March 6th, 2006

Hey guys, Luke Burgess here. Before I turn you over to Sam Hopkins today
I want to share a few videos with you.

All three video clips are interviews with Dr. Aubrey de Grey. If you
recall Dr. de Grey is a biogerontologist at Cambridge University who
believes one day humans will live to 1,000 years old.

Back in early January Dr. de Grey wrote a piece for Archimedes' Lever
after his appearance on 60 Minutes.

I found the 60 Minutes interview as well as two other interviews online.
You can see all the interviews by clicking on the links below. Enjoy.

I think you should pay attention to what Dr. de Grey has to say. Sure
living to 1,000.even 120 seems outlandish and unthinkable. But that's
how technological and biological breakthroughs are achieved, by pursuing
the unthinkable.

The End is Not-so-Nigh
By Sam Hopkins

The end may be nigh. But this is the beginning.

This is the beginning of a new era of commerce, marked by the invention
of the RFID system of product tracking. You've read about RFID
(radio-frequency identification) in Archimedes' Lever before, courtesy
of Luke Burgess.

Like the introduction of the bar code eliminated key-punching and
endless price-tagging in stores of every kind, RFID encoding will
expedite inventory processing and even package shipment for the
globalized markets of the new era.

But some are wary, as they perceive RFID to be a harbinger of the
apocalypse.

Take Katherine Albrecht, featured in a Wired news story yesterday for
her dire predictions that the mark of speedy stock will also be the mark
of Satan's spawn.

That's right, Albrecht has written a book called The Spychips Threat:
Why Christians Should Resist RFID and Electronic Surveillance. In
"Spychips," Albrecht delineates her case that the events depicted in the
Bible's Book of Revelation are coming to pass, and that RFID is but a
drop in the bucket of millenarian portents.

It's not all crazy. The VeriChip, an FDA-approved, subcutaneous
(under-skin) RFID implant intended for humans, is creepy. But so are the
retinal scans, fingerprint analyses, and other body-based techniques
currently used worldwide to ascertain identity in cases where precise
confirmation is needed.

A tiny $2.00 high-tech company just unlocked one of the largest sources
of energy anywhere on earth.

Its revolutionary technology won the 2005 World Technology Award for
Energy. And Business 2.0 Magazine says, "That puts the company on the
cutting edge of a trend in the $7 billion solar industry called
building-integrated photovoltaics..."

We're calling it "the dawn of endless energy." See how this breakthrough

How Many Horsemen?

I understand that technological advances can be frightening. I've
witnessed foreigners newly arrived in the United States gawking at TiVo
like Phil Hartman's classic "Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer" character on
Saturday Night Live.

Heck, once I picked up an American expatriate friend at the airport and
watched his jaw drop as we passed a billboard on the highway that
displayed exactly what song a particular classic rock station was
broadcasting at that time. "They're playing 'Hotel California' right
now?!! How does the billboard know that?!!"

But let's consider the society that generates all these otherwise
ominous advances. We base technology on individuality and consumerism,
not totalitarianism and a desire to control people's lives.

By and large, I have faith that today's international marketplace would
be altogether resistant to any effort to implant VeriSign that seemed
too heavy-handed. There would be massive revolts and people would riot
against the clinics where chips were implanted if the idea became too
much to bear.

But people are aware of the advantages that RFID poses, and so they
relax.

Ultimately, the notion that every step forward is actually a step to
Armageddon relies on the basis that people are drones. It is easy to
remember Nazism, Stalinism, and other movements that have turned the
masses into little more than cogs in a wheel. But I - and you - live in
a different reality.

We live in the world of express lanes and paying at the pump. We have to
cash out quickly so we can hurry our kids to enriching activities, or to
our places of recreation, work, and worship. We still have brains, and
we will use those to simplify our lives as much as possible while
freeing up time for even more productive activity. Fear is often
well-placed, but sometimes it just gets in the way.

So enjoy the convenience of the age, don't get anything implanted that
you're worried about, and if you see the neighborhood Nostradamus tell
him or her to rest easy regarding RFID.
