Customers, Partners Drive Innovation; IT's Job May Be to Support All That Chatter
Seventy percent of the executives called innovation "critical" to company success in a recent poll, yet just 47 percent say they collaborate extensively. Employees were most frequently the source of innovative ideas, followed by partners and customers. In fact, some observers suggest that companies that rely primarily on informal or external sources of innovation may have a distinct edge. One role IT will play in this emerging model is implementing new and better collaboration solutions. Don't even think about evaluating the technology until first completing a thorough examination of organizational culture, staff behavior and motivation. Ultimately, IT's main role may be to implement solutions that convert all this brainstorming into reality.
