Careers: Laid-Off? Or was it something else?
Laid-Off? Or was it something else?

Think layoffs are just bad luck? You may want to think again. If you've been laid-off, downsized, reorganized, or even if you quit due to an untenable work situation, chances are you may have actually been fired and didn't know it. Why would companies do this? Well, the unfortunate truth is that layoffs and downsizings are a way for companies to remove "unwanted employees." Unlike a firing, layoffs do not require an abundance of paperwork, protection against a potential lawsuit, or even an explanation.
One of the keys to increasing your job security may lie in understanding that companies today may be more afraid of being sued than they are of misleading their employees. You can't count on a company to tell you the truth about why you were let go or what you may have done that landed you on the wrong side of the line. The best idea is to do an examination after every job you leave to make sure you aren't accidentally falling into any of the hidden traps that can lead to being put on that layoff list.
A scary picture to be sure, but something we should all be aware of to ensure greater job security in the current corporate climate of protectionism and rapid change. Protect all you've worked for first, then you can go for your goals with confidence!
