CIO Insider: What Fosters Innovation

CIO Insider - Your Guide to What's New on CIO.com
The Workplace: Innovation Alchemy
Which is more important to innovation: people, process or
environment? Columnist Michael Schrage finds it isn't the
answer you'd expect. Sure, you need innovators, but if you
haven't got processes in place for them to drive their
innovative thinking, or an environment that nurtures it,
you might as well have automatons. But the big question is,
which matters more: process or environment?

1. From the Publisher: Certifiable
CIO publisher Gary Beach is worried that we're in the early
stages of a massive hardware, software and network
infrastructure buildout, and he doesn't believe most tech
workers have received adequate cross-technology training.
His recommendation: Augment vendor-sponsored certification
with a mandatory, national program administered by state
governments that would quantify the cross-platform knowledge
of U.S. information technology workers. Is he certifiably
crazy? He invites your responses.

2. The CIO Role: Profession or Career
At our recent CIO06 conference, Pepsico CIO Tom Trainer
lamented the fact that CIOs, while having good careers,
don't really have a profession with all the standards and
certifications of other recognized professions like
accounting, law or medicine. Comments invited on this
viewpoint too!

3. Weigh In: Contract Labor Vigilance
Quick hits. Big returns. Strategies that truly deliver these
benefits are tough to come by. But as executives and project
managers constantly battle to reduce costs and improve cash
flow in the short term, some are finding that these gains
can be realized through a new approach to contract labor.
Some experts from A.T. Kearney explain.
