Who would of thought that one day equity traders and stock analysts would be regularly watching the Weather Channel to help construct forecasts for a particular market or stock? This has become a key task on Wall Street these days, especially after the major financial fallout caused by hurricanes Rita, Katrina and Wilma.

A large number of traders, analysts and portfolio managers are now looking at the weather as a major risk factor. The adverse impact these harsh storms inflicted on the Gulf Coast's energy infrastructure exposed a huge vulnerability in America's oil and gas supply chain. This ignited a big increase in the price of gasoline, as well as heating oil and natural gas needed to keep households warm during the winter.

All this has investors and traders very interested in just where the next hurricane might hit. In fact, these days they care about the weather forecast about as much as they care about the future direction of interest rates. The current environment on Wall Street has traders regularly monitoring the Weather Channel as well as viewing weather related websites. Many believe that factoring in the weather when selecting stocks is an absolute must. The reason is because these types of natural disasters can do a lot of damage to the economy and start a huge energy crisis, which could reduce profits for many companies.

Traders at large institutions like T. Rowe Price and others tune into the Weather Channel so they can report on the weather as it happens. During past storms they were constantly getting updates from the National Hurricane Center's website to determine the possible impact on stock prices. For instance, if oil rigs and refineries go down or are significantly damaged, many times you will see energy prices surge to the upside. This might be good for some of the energy stocks but is detrimental to most companies as it cuts into their profit margins, causing the overall market to turn to the downside.

During Katrina, for example, money flowed into many energy and building material stocks anticipating large price appreciation from energy shortages and the major re-construction efforts that will take place. After the year we have had in the Gulf, look for weather forecasting to be a permanent part of the investing landscape for some time to come.
