Five New Community Search Tools Compared

It's the latest wave on the Web: tools that combine search
with tagging and social networks. These sites use real people
to help tag articles to help create more relevant search
results, and build communities around those folks as they
share information and destinations. It's a fascinating advance
in Web culture, and it's emerging rapidly. We just put
together an analysis of five of the neatest sites, including
del.icio.us, Yahoo! My Web 2.0 and Jeteye. Check out our
reviews for details on how well these services work, and then
visit the sites for a look into the future of the World Wide
Web.

The End of the Ultralight is Nigh

Yes, this may be the last crop of truly small notebooks out
there--better buy one now! That's because it appears that
the wide-screen TV is about to be integrated into the notebook,
which means wider screens, bigger systems and heavier
batteries. Will these new screens push the smaller ones out
of the way? Check out our story about why this could turn
out to be the good old days of small systems.

First Apple iPod Video Review

Wow. To say that our reviewer liked the video iPod would be
an understatement. He absolutely, head-over-heels loved it.
The video looked great in his tests, but it is still
primarily an audio player. And because you can now get the
30GB version for the same price as the old 20GB model, it's
even a bargain. Find out why our portable media player
analyst thinks the new iPod is the best of the bunch, and
how well it did on our audio and video tests. Our review is
posted now...with pictures.

Six Video iPod Downers

Not everyone is sanguine about the video iPod. In his latest
rant, our Gearlog editor, David Coursey, has some less than
stellar things to say about the new product. He's come up
with six iPod predictions, and they are not positive--at
least not for the video version. Find out why he's less than
bullish on this new player, and what Apple needs to do to
make it better.

The Secret Plans of Microsoft's Stealth Office Group

What's the charter of Microsoft's shadowy Office Business
Applications group--the Redmond version of the NSA?
Microsoft's not saying much, but our Watcher got some hidden
details from sources deep inside the company. It seems that
the OBA is charged with bridging enterprise data and
information workers, and ties together virtually all of
Microsoft's disparate assets. What else did we uncover?

group plans on taking over the world.

details on what will replace SSL2 (Secure Sockets Layer),
which is destined for the scrap heap. The new browser also
plans on blocking access to certain problematic sites, along
with deep-sixing one of the stupidest warning messages ever.

Splogging Takes Center Stage

What happens when you combine spam with Weblogs? You probably
don't want to know, but you should. It's called splogging,
wherein unscrupulous users automate blog creation to push
links upon links upon links of junk. Google recently got hit
with an infestation, but more are on the way. Our security
expert, Larry Seltzer, dives into the whole "splogging"
phenomenon and offers his own personal recommendations about
what to do. Some are blaming Google, some blame PubSub,
Feedster and other sites. Splogs are a problem, and they are
only getting worse--check out our story to learn more.

Flock Browser Could Replace Firefox

That's the conclusion of our Publish experts, as they explore
the first all-new browser to be developed in years. Flock is
designed as a "social browser," with integrated tagging,
blogging and a lot more. It's built on top of Firefox, so
even if it takes off it won't obviate the original. It's a
cool, trendy but buggy browser that's not even at the real
beta stage yet. If you like Firefox but want more, check out
our report on Flock. It could be the browser for you.

Will Flock Trump Firefox?
